Prayer After Holy Communion

After receiving Holy Communion, Our Lord is truly and substantially present within us in a unique and intimate way. For this reason, the moments after Communion are among the most precious moments of prayer in the Christian life.

Many people are tempted to become distracted quickly after receiving the Blessed Sacrament. Yet the Church encourages the faithful to remain recollected and prayerful.

Remain Quietly with the Lord

After returning to your place:

  • kneel or sit quietly
  • avoid unnecessary distractions
  • remain attentive to Christ’s presence

There is no need to force emotions or complicated thoughts.

Sometimes the best thanksgiving is simple silence before God.

Offer Thanksgiving

You may thank the Lord for:

  • the gift of salvation
  • His mercy
  • His presence in the Eucharist
  • blessings received
  • graces needed

Simple words spoken sincerely are enough.

Pray for Others

The time after Communion is also a fitting moment to pray for:

  • family
  • the sick
  • the dying
  • the Church
  • vocations
  • those far from God

Ask for Grace to Live Well

Holy Communion should shape daily life.

Ask for grace:

  • to resist sin
  • to grow in charity
  • to persevere in prayer
  • to carry your crosses faithfully
  • to become more like Christ

Do Not Rush Away Inwardly

Even when practical circumstances require us to leave promptly after Mass, we should try not to leave spiritually the moment Communion is over.

Remain inwardly recollected for a few moments.

The soul learns reverence gradually through such small acts of fidelity.
