Behind the Sacristy Door

Thursday 29 October, 7.00–8.00pm at St Mary’s

Have you ever wondered what is kept in the sacristy, why the priest wears different vestments, or what all the vessels and objects used at Mass are called?

Come behind the sacristy door for a practical and informal evening exploring how the Church prepares for Mass. We will look closely at our Roman and Gothic vestments, the silver-plated Book of the Gospels, the Roman Missal and Lectionary, and the different liturgical colours used throughout the Church’s year.

We will also examine the chalice, paten, ciborium, pyx, monstrance, altar linens, cruets, holy oils, thurible and incense, together with other objects normally seen only from a distance. We will explain what each one is for, how it is used and what it teaches us about Catholic worship and the Holy Eucharist.

This will be a visual, practical evening with plenty of opportunity to ask questions. It is especially suitable for those becoming Catholic, our Confirmandi, sacramental families and altar servers, but it is open to everyone.

Come and discover the prayer, meaning and careful preparation behind the celebration of Mass.
