Children’s Liturgy – Listen to Jesus

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Second Sunday of Lent
Theme: Listen to Jesus

1. Welcome & Gathering

(Gather the children in a quiet space. Place a Bible or cross in the centre.)

Leader:

“Today Jesus takes His friends up a mountain.”

Pause.

“Something amazing happens there.”

Make the Sign of the Cross together.

“In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.”

Leader:

“Jesus,
help us to listen to Your word
and to trust You.
Amen.”

2. Introducing the Theme

Ask:

“Have you ever been somewhere high, like a hill or a mountain?”

“What could you see from the top?”

Say:

“On a mountain, things look different.”

“Today, Jesus shows His friends
who He really is.”

3. Gospel (Simplified – Matthew 17:1–9)

(Read slowly.)

Jesus took Peter, James, and John
up a high mountain.

There, something wonderful happened.

Jesus’ face shone like the sun.
His clothes became bright as light.

Moses and Elijah appeared
and talked with Him.

A bright cloud covered them,
and a voice said:

“This is my beloved Son.
Listen to Him.”

The friends were afraid.
Jesus touched them and said:

“Do not be afraid.”

They looked up
and saw only Jesus.

Leader:
“The Gospel of the Lord.”

Children:
“Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.”

4. Reflection

Ask:

“What did Jesus look like on the mountain?”
(Bright, shining.)

“Who spoke from the cloud?”
(God the Father.)

“What did God say?”
(Listen to Him.)

Say:

“God showed the disciples
that Jesus is His Son.”

“And God gave them
one important job:

Listen to Jesus.”

Explain gently:

“Jesus was going to suffer and die soon.
The mountain helped them remember
who He really was
so they would not be too afraid later.”

Connect to the First Reading:

“In the first reading,
God tells Abraham to go to a new place.”

“Abraham listens to God
and trusts Him.”

Say clearly:

“Faith means listening
and trusting God.”

5. Activity – Listen or Not Listen

Leader says actions.
Children answer: “Listen” or “Not listen”.

Examples:

Listening when mum or dad speaks → Listen
Ignoring the teacher → Not listen
Doing what Jesus says → Listen
Being unkind on purpose → Not listen
Saying sorry → Listen
Telling lies → Not listen

Say:

“When we listen to Jesus,
we walk in His light.”

6. Quiet Prayer

Ask children to close their eyes.

Leader:

“Jesus,
help me to listen to You.”

Pause.

“Help me to trust You.”

Pause.

“Help me to follow You.”

7. Living the Gospel This Week

Ask:

“What is one way
you can listen to Jesus this week?”

Offer ideas:

Being kind
Telling the truth
Saying sorry
Helping at home
Praying each day

Say:

“We do not live on the mountain.
We live every day.”

“But the light of Jesus
goes with us.”

8. Closing Prayer

Leader:

“Jesus,
You showed Your friends Your glory.

Help us to listen to You,
to trust God,
and to walk in Your light.
Amen.”

9. Sending Back

Leader:

“God said:
Listen to Jesus.”

“So let us go back
and try to live
what He teaches us.”

Make the Sign of the Cross together
and return quietly to the assembly.
