Children’s Liturgy of the Word – Choosing the Way of Jesus

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)

Theme: Choosing the Way of Jesus

Welcome & Gathering

(Gather the children in a circle.
Place a Bible or cross in the centre.)

Leader:

“Today Jesus teaches us
how to choose the best way to live.”

Pause.

“He teaches us
how to choose what is right.”

Make the Sign of the Cross together.

“In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.”

Leader:

“Jesus,
help us to listen to You
and follow You today.
Amen.”

Introducing the Theme

Ask:

“Have you ever had to make a hard choice?”

(Let a few children answer.)

Say:

“God gives us choices every day —
to be kind or unkind,
to tell the truth or not,
to forgive or stay angry.”

Explain simply:

“In the Bible today,
God tells us
we can choose life
or choose what hurts us.”

Hold up two hands.

“One hand is God’s way.
One hand is not.”

“We get to choose.”

Gospel (Simplified – Matthew 5)

(Read slowly.)

Jesus said:

“God wants you
to love with your whole heart.

Being angry can hurt people.
Being unkind can hurt people.

Jesus wants us to love,
forgive,
and speak kindly.”

He also said:

“Let your yes be yes
and your no be no.”

That means:

“Tell the truth
and be honest.”

Leader:
“The Gospel of the Lord.”

Children:
“Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.”

Reflection

Ask:

“Does Jesus only care
about what we do?”

(No — He also cares about our hearts.)

Say:

“Jesus knows
that when our hearts are kind,
our actions will be kind too.”

“God wants to help us
choose the right way.”

Optional Activity 1 – Right Way or Wrong Way

Leader gives situations.
Children show thumbs up for God’s way
or thumbs down for not God’s way.

Examples:

Sharing toys

Being mean

Telling the truth

Saying sorry

Hitting someone

Say:

“When we choose God’s way,
we choose life.”

Optional Activity 2 – Heart Prayer

Ask children to place hand on heart.

Leader:

“Jesus,
help my heart
to choose love.”

Pause.

“Help me to forgive.”

Pause.

“Help me to do what is right.”

Living the Gospel This Week (3 minutes)

Ask:

“What is one good choice
you can make this week?”

Give examples:

Being kind

Telling the truth

Saying sorry

Helping at home

Say:

“God is always with us
when we try to choose the right way.”

Prayer

“Jesus,
thank You for teaching us
how to choose what is right.
Help us to love others
and follow You every day.
Amen.”

Sending Back

“Today Jesus reminds us
we can choose the way of love.”

and return quietly.
