Exodus Chapter 31

Exodus 31 — “The Seal of God: Spirit, Skill, and the Holy Sabbath”

After the altar, the garments, the blood, and the prayer,
God now places His signature upon the whole work.

Exodus 31 teaches a deep truth:

God not only saves and sanctifies — He seals.

What belongs to God must bear His mark.

1. God Fills a Craftsman with His Spirit

“See, I have called by name Bezalel… and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence…” (Ex 31:2–3)

The first person in Scripture said to be “filled with the Spirit of God”
is not a prophet —
but an artist.

God cares how His dwelling is made.

Holiness includes craftsmanship.

St Gregory of Nyssa writes:

“The Spirit who orders the heavens also orders the work of human hands when they are offered to God.”
(Life of Moses)

Sacred beauty is not optional.

2. God Calls and Trains His Servants

“I have given to all able men ability…” (v. 6)

Skill itself is grace.

The Church does not despise art, architecture, music, or skill —
they become holy when offered to God.

God sanctifies human talent.

3. God Finishes What He Begins

Everything described in Exodus 25–30 now receives divine confirmation.

This is God saying:

This house is Mine.
This priesthood is Mine.
This worship is Mine.

4. The Sabbath: God’s Covenant Sign

“You shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you…” (v. 13)

God does not seal His covenant with gold.

He seals it with time.

The Sabbath means:

God reigns.
Man rests.

Work without worship becomes slavery.

The Sabbath is freedom.

5. The Sabbath Is Holy

“Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death.” (v. 14)

This is severe because:

To reject sacred time
is to reject God Himself.

The Sabbath proclaims:

God is not a tool.
He is the Lord.

6. God Himself Rests

“In six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested.” (v. 17)

God’s rest is not weariness.

It is delight.

God rests in what He has made.

He desires us to rest in Him.

7. The Tablets of Stone

“He gave to Moses the two tablets of the testimony…” (v. 18)

The covenant is now written.

Stone signifies permanence.

God’s law is not temporary.

It is truth.

These tablets will soon be broken —
but God’s covenant will not be.

  • Bezalel → Christ the master builder
  • Tabernacle → Christ’s Body
  • Sabbath → Resurrection Day
  • Tablets → Christ the Word

St Augustine writes:

“The Sabbath of Israel becomes the Lord’s Day in Christ, when the new creation begins.”

and mark us as Your own,
through Jesus Christ,
who is Lord of the Sabbath
and Giver of the Spirit.
Amen.
