GROW IN FAITH 13 – Humility

Seeing Ourselves Truthfully

Opening Prayer

Lord God,
You are great and we are Your children.
Teach us to see ourselves truthfully.
Keep us from pride
and help us grow in humility.
Amen.

Part One

What Humility Is

Sometimes people think humility means
thinking badly of yourself.

That is not true.

Humility means seeing clearly:

God is God.
We are not.

God is the source of every good thing.
Our talents, our strengths, our gifts —
all come from Him.

Jesus teaches:

“Every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled:
and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

Humility is not pretending we have no gifts.

It is knowing where they come from.

Scripture

“Every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled:
and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”
(Luke 14:11)

Think and Discuss

What is the difference between confidence and pride?

Have you ever wanted others to notice you?

Why can pride damage friendships?

Why does God lift up the humble?

Listen without judging.

Part Two

The Danger of Pride

Pride tells us:

“I do not need help.”
“I am better than others.”
“I deserve more.”

Pride compares constantly.

It wants to win.
It wants attention.
It wants to be first.

But pride isolates us.

It makes it hard to admit mistakes.
It makes it hard to apologise.
It makes it hard to depend on God.

Humility opens the heart.

It allows us to say:

“Thank You.”
“I was wrong.”
“I need help.”

Guidance for Adults

Model humble speech: apologise, admit limits, give thanks.
Children learn humility more from example than instruction.

Part Three

Growing in Humility

Humility grows through small acts:

Thanking God for your gifts.

Admitting mistakes quickly.

Listening more than speaking.

Serving without seeking praise.

Jesus Himself is the greatest example.

He is the Son of God,
yet He washed His disciples’ feet.

True greatness does not shout.

It serves.

When we remember that every good thing comes from God,
we are free from comparison.

We can rejoice in others’ gifts
without feeling threatened.

That is humility.

Quiet Reflection

Sit quietly for a moment.

Think of one gift you have.

Now say quietly:

“Thank You, Lord.”

Then think of one area where you struggle.

Say:

“Lord, help me.”

Remain in silence together.

Practise This Week

Choose one:

• Say “thank you” for a gift or compliment without boasting.
• Admit one mistake quickly.
• Let someone else go first.
• Do one good act without telling anyone.

Choose one and keep it steady.

Optional Response

Choose one:

Memory
Repeat slowly:
“He that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”
Say it three times carefully.

Action
Bow your head briefly.
Say: “All good things come from You.”

Closing Prayer

Lord,
You are the source of all goodness.
Keep us free from pride.
Teach us to serve quietly
and give thanks for all we receive.
Make our hearts humble and joyful.
Amen.
