GROW IN FAITH 6 – Listening to God’s Word

Learning to Hear God Speak

Opening Prayer

Lord God,
You speak to Your people.
Open our ears and our hearts.
Help us listen carefully to Your Word.
Amen.

Part One

God Speaks

Sometimes we think of prayer
as only us speaking to God.

But prayer also means listening.

God speaks through the Bible.

The Bible is not just an old book.

It is the Word of God written down
so that every generation can hear Him.

When we hear Scripture at Mass,
when we read it at home,
God is speaking.

Scripture

“Your word is a lamp to my feet,
and a light to my paths.”
(Psalm 118:105)

Think and Discuss

Why do you think God gives us His Word in writing?

What happens when we ignore good advice?

How can God’s Word be like a light?

Is it always easy to listen carefully?

Listen without rushing.

Part Two

What God’s Word Does

A lamp does not remove the road.

It shows where to step.

God’s Word works like that.

It helps us:

Know what is right.

Understand who God is.

See where we are wrong.

Remember what truly matters.

Sometimes we hear something in Scripture
that comforts us.

Sometimes we hear something
that challenges us.

Both are gifts.

God’s Word is not meant only to be heard.

It is meant to shape how we live.

Guidance for Adults

Keep Scripture regular and simple.
Even one verse read slowly can form a child more deeply than long explanation.

Part Three

Learning to Listen

Listening takes effort.

We must:

Be quiet.

Pay attention.

Think about what we heard.

At Mass, when the Gospel is read,
Christ Himself speaks to us.

At home, when we read Scripture slowly,
we give God space to speak.

We do not need to understand everything.

We only need to be faithful listeners.

Over time, God’s Word forms our hearts.

It teaches us how to pray.
It teaches us how to choose.
It teaches us how to hope.

Quiet Reflection

Sit quietly for a moment.

Think of one sentence from Scripture
that you remember.

If none comes to mind,
simply say in your heart:

“Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.”

Remain in silence together.

Practise This Week

Choose one:

• Read one short verse from the Bible each day.
• Listen carefully to the Gospel at Mass.
• Before reading Scripture, say: “Lord, help me listen.”
• Share one line from Sunday’s Gospel with someone else.

Choose one and keep it steady.

Optional Response

Choose one:

Memory
Repeat slowly:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet.”
Say it three times with attention.

Action
Place a Bible somewhere visible in your home or classroom this week.
Pause before it once a day in silence.

Closing Prayer

Lord,
Thank You for speaking to us through Your Word.
Help us listen carefully and live faithfully.
May Your Word guide our steps
and shape our hearts.
Amen.
