Learning to Choose What Is Right
Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You know what it is to be tempted.
Help us when we struggle.
Give us strength to choose what is good.
Amen.
Part One
Even Jesus Was Tempted
The Gospel tells us that Jesus was tempted.
After fasting in the desert,
when He was hungry and tired,
the devil tempted Him.
Temptation is not the same as sin.
Temptation is when something wrong
looks attractive.
It may promise:
Comfort
Attention
Power
An easier path
Jesus was tempted,
but He did not sin.
Scripture
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert
to be tempted by the devil.”
(Matthew 4:1)
Think and Discuss
What does it mean to be tempted?
Is being tempted the same as doing something wrong?
When are you most tempted — when tired, angry, bored?
Why do you think temptation often comes when we feel weak?
Listen calmly and honestly.
Part Two
How Temptation Works
Temptation often begins quietly.
A thought.
A feeling.
An excuse.
It may sound like:
“No one will notice.”
“It’s not a big deal.”
“You deserve this.”
Temptation tries to make sin look small
and goodness look difficult.
But temptation does not force us.
We still choose.
And we are not alone.
Jesus answered temptation
with trust in His Father
and with the Word of God.
Grace gives us strength in the moment of struggle.
Guidance for Adults
Help children see the difference between feeling tempted and choosing sin.
Avoid fear-based language.
Focus on courage and grace.
Part Three
What To Do When Tempted
When we feel tempted,
we can:
Pause
Pray
Remember what is true
Walk away if needed
A short prayer is powerful:
“Lord, help me.”
Temptation grows stronger
when we keep it secret and feed it.
It grows weaker
when we bring it into the light.
If we fall,
we do not give up.
We turn back to God.
Each time we resist temptation,
our freedom grows stronger.
Each time we return after failing,
grace strengthens us.
Quiet Reflection
Sit quietly for a moment.
Think about one area where you often struggle.
Now say quietly:
“Lord, give me strength.”
Remain in silence together.
Practise This Week
Choose one:
• When tempted, pause and pray before acting.
• Memorise one short prayer for moments of struggle.
• Avoid one situation that usually leads you to sin.
• Each night, thank God for one temptation you resisted.
Choose one and keep it steady.
Optional Response
Choose one:
Memory
Repeat slowly:
“Lord, help me.”
Say it three times with attention.
Action
Stand up and take one deliberate step forward.
Say: “I choose what is good.”
Notice that choosing involves movement.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You were tempted and did not sin.
Be with us when we struggle.
Strengthen us by Your grace.
Help us choose what is right
and return quickly when we fall.
Amen.
