Just Teach Sheet Children August Week 3

️ Parent/Guardian/Catechist – Just Teach Sheet

Week 3: Listening to God
August Theme: Prayer & Personal Relationship with God
Sacrament Track: First Holy Communion
For Ages: 7+ (with parent, guardian, or catechist guidance)
Focus: God speaks to us today—especially through the Bible, the Church, the Mass, and the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Prayer is not just talking—it’s listening.

 Weekly Goal

The child learns that:

God really speaks to us now, not only in Bible times.

We hear Him best in Scripture, Mass, and silent prayer.

Listening to God helps us prepare to receive Jesus in Holy Communion.

 What You’ll Need

This sheet

A Bible (or printed verses)

The child’s prayer space (Week 2) with crucifix, candle, and Bible

Paper and colours/crayons for activities

️ Opening Prayer (Say daily)

Lord Jesus,
You are the Good Shepherd who calls His sheep by name.
Teach me to hear Your voice in the Bible,
At Mass, and in my heart.
I want to follow You all my life. Amen.

Day 1 – God Knows Your Name

Say aloud:
God doesn’t just speak to the world—He speaks to you. He knows your name and loves you personally.

 1 Samuel 3:10
“The Lord called… and Samuel said, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’”

️ Mini Homily Reflection:
Samuel was a boy like you when God called him. At first, he didn’t recognise God’s voice, but he learned to listen. You can learn too.

Ask: “If God called your name today, what would you say back to Him?”

Practice:
Sit quietly for 30 seconds. Say: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

Day 2 – Be Still Before God

Say aloud:
Sometimes God speaks in the quiet. We can hear Him better when we slow down.

 Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God.”

️ Mini Homily Reflection:
When we stop rushing and are still, our hearts become like calm water that can reflect the light of God.

Ask:

“Where is your favourite quiet place?”

“Could we make our prayer space even quieter today?”

Activity:
Light the candle. Sit in silence for one minute, thinking about Jesus. End by saying: “Jesus, I know You are here.”

Day 3 – Listening in the Bible

Say aloud:
The Bible is God’s voice in written form. When we read it, He is speaking to us.

 Matthew 17:5
“This is my beloved Son… listen to Him!”

️ Mini Homily Reflection:
God the Father tells us to listen to Jesus. Jesus speaks to us in the Gospels.

Ask:

“What do you think Jesus wants to say to you today?”

Activity:
Read a short Gospel story (e.g., Jesus calming the storm, Matthew 8:23–27). Ask: “What does this tell us about Jesus?”

Day 4 – Listening at Mass

Say aloud:
At Mass, God speaks through the readings and the Gospel. We should listen with open hearts, because His words are alive.

 Hebrews 4:12
“The word of God is living and active.”

️ Mini Homily Reflection:
The same Jesus we hear in the Gospel is the One we receive in Holy Communion.

Ask:

“Why do you think we say ‘Thanks be to God’ after the readings?”

Activity:
This Sunday, listen carefully to the readings. Choose one sentence to remember all week.

️ Day 5 – Listening in Prayer

Say aloud:
We can speak to God, then pause to listen. He may speak to our hearts with peace, ideas, or reminders of His love.

 John 10:27
“My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

️ Mini Homily Reflection:
Following Jesus means listening to Him every day.

Ask:

“What’s one thing you think Jesus wants you to do this week?”

Practice:
Pray: “Lord Jesus, speak to me.” Wait quietly for a short time. End with: “Thank You, Lord, for being with me.”

Weekend Wrap-Up – Listening to God

Invite discussion:

“Where did you hear God most clearly this week—in the Bible, at Mass, or in the quiet?”

“What helps you listen better: silence, nature, or church?”

“How can we make more space for God next week?”

✍️ Prayer Prompt or Journal Space

Write or draw:

“Jesus, I want to listen to You when…”

“One thing I think You’re saying to me is…”

️ Apologetics for Parents (Talking Point)

Q: “If God doesn’t speak out loud, how can we know what He wants?”
A: God speaks most clearly through the Bible, the teaching of the Church, and the Sacraments. The Holy Spirit helps us apply His truth to our lives. Listening in prayer prepares us to obey Him.

Optional Extension (Older children or adults)

CCC 2653 – “Prayer should accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture so that a dialogue takes place between God and man.”

Reflect:
Prayer is not just talking—it’s a conversation. Listening is how we receive God’s guidance.
