Luke 16 —
“Stewardship, Allegiance, and the Eternal Weight of Present Choices”
Luke 15 revealed the joy of restoration.
Luke 16 shifts to responsibility. Mercy received must shape how one lives. Jesus teaches that possessions, influence, and opportunity are entrusted realities, not ultimate ends. The disciple must live with eternity in view, recognising that divided allegiance leads to spiritual blindness.
This chapter teaches one central truth:
Faithful stewardship, undivided allegiance to God, and awareness of eternal consequence shape how disciples use temporary resources and respond to divine truth.
1. The Unjust Steward: Shrewdness and Accountability
“What is this that I hear…?” (Lk 16:2)
A steward faces dismissal for mismanagement.
He reduces debts to secure future favour.
Jesus commends not dishonesty, but foresight.
St Augustine writes:
“The steward’s urgency exposes how lightly we treat eternal matters.”
(Sermons)
Typology
The steward symbolises humanity managing borrowed time and resources.
Worldly prudence highlights the need for spiritual intentionality.
Preparation for the future is wisdom — when directed toward God.
2. Wealth as Instrument, Not Master
“Make friends… by means of unrighteous wealth…” (16:9)
Material goods become tools for generosity.
St Gregory the Great teaches:
“Wealth finds purpose when directed toward mercy.”
(Homilies)
Faithfulness in small matters reveals character.
Typology
Temporary possessions test eternal priorities.
Stewardship anticipates accountability.
3. Divided Allegiance: God or Wealth
“You cannot serve God and money.” (16:13)
Service implies devotion, not occasional preference.
St Ambrose writes:
“The heart cannot be ruled by competing masters.”
(On the Gospel of Luke)
Typology
Mammon symbolises misplaced trust.
Worship reveals ultimate allegiance.
4. The Pharisees’ Reaction: Justification Before Men
“What is exalted among men…” (16:15)
Religious leaders scoff.
St Augustine teaches:
“Human approval often masks spiritual emptiness.”
(Sermons)
God discerns the heart beyond appearances.
5. Law and Kingdom: Fulfilment, Not Abandonment
“The Law and the Prophets were until John…” (16:16)
Jesus affirms continuity and fulfilment.
St Gregory the Great writes:
“Grace completes what the Law foreshadowed.”
(Homilies)
Kingdom urgency presses upon hearers.
Typology
Old covenant promise finds resolution in Christ.
Divine truth remains unaltered.
6. Fidelity and Integrity: Covenant Faithfulness
Jesus references marital faithfulness to illustrate moral seriousness.
St Ambrose teaches:
“Covenant loyalty reflects spiritual integrity.”
(On the Gospel of Luke)
Typology
Human fidelity mirrors devotion to God.
Commitment resists convenience.
7. The Rich Man and Lazarus: Reversal Beyond Death
A wealthy man lives in comfort; Lazarus suffers at his gate.
After death:
• Lazarus rests
• the rich man suffers
St Augustine writes:
“Earthly comfort without compassion becomes eternal poverty.”
(Sermons)
The rich man seeks relief and warning for his brothers.
Abraham replies:
“They have Moses and the prophets…”
Typology
Lazarus represents the overlooked poor.
The rich man symbolises self-contained privilege.
Death reveals true orientation.
Reversal exposes neglected mercy.
8. The Sufficiency of Revelation
“If they do not hear…” (16:31)
Miracles cannot substitute for receptive hearts.
St Gregory the Great teaches:
“Revelation ignored hardens resistance.”
(Homilies)
Typology
Scripture provides adequate guidance.
Response determines destiny.
