Luke Chapter 20

Luke 20 —

“Authority Questioned, Truth Revealed, and the Exposure of False Religion”

Luke 19 showed Christ entering Jerusalem as King and purifying worship.
Luke 20 unfolds the inevitable confrontation that follows. Religious leaders question His authority, Jesus exposes their spiritual inconsistency, warns through parable, dismantles political traps, clarifies resurrection hope, and unmasks religious pride. Truth stands calmly amid calculated resistance.

This chapter teaches one central truth:

Christ’s divine authority exposes spiritual blindness, demands allegiance to God above human systems, reveals the reality of resurrection life, and warns against religion divorced from humility.

1. Authority Challenged: Fear Behind the Question

“By what authority…?” (Lk 20:2)

Leaders question Jesus publicly.

He answers with a counter-question about John’s baptism.

St Augustine writes:

“Those unwilling to recognise truth seek to control it.”
(Sermons)

Their hesitation reveals concern for reputation, not truth.

Typology

The exchange exposes hearts governed by calculation.

Authority is recognised by humility, not strategy.

2. The Parable of the Wicked Tenants: Rejected Son

“He sent his beloved son…” (20:13)

Tenants abuse servants and kill the heir.

St Gregory the Great teaches:

“Human resistance cannot cancel divine ownership.”
(Homilies)

Judgment follows rejection.

Typology

The vineyard symbolises covenant stewardship.

The servants represent prophets.

The son represents Christ.

Rejection reveals spiritual rebellion.

The cornerstone imagery points to divine reversal.

3. The Cornerstone: Judgment and Foundation

“The stone… has become the cornerstone.” (20:17)

St Ambrose writes:

“Christ is foundation for believers and stumbling block for the proud.”
(On the Gospel of Luke)

Typology

Falling upon the stone represents resistance.

Being built upon it signifies salvation.

4. Tribute to Caesar: Allegiance Clarified

“Render… to Caesar… to God…” (20:25)

A political trap seeks to divide loyalty.

Jesus affirms civil responsibility without diminishing divine claim.

St Augustine teaches:

“Earthly duty never eclipses allegiance to God.”
(Sermons)

Typology

The coin bears Caesar’s image; humanity bears God’s image.

Ultimate allegiance belongs to the Creator.

5. The Sadducees and Resurrection: Life Beyond Death

“He is not God of the dead…” (20:38)

A hypothetical case challenges resurrection doctrine.

Jesus corrects their limited understanding.

St Gregory the Great writes:

“Resurrection transforms existence, not merely restores it.”
(Homilies)

Typology

Marriage imagery yields to eternal identity.

Life in God transcends earthly structures.

6. The Messiah’s Identity: Lord and Son

“How can they say…?” (20:41)

Jesus cites Psalm 110.

St Ambrose teaches:

“The Messiah exceeds human expectation.”
(On the Gospel of Luke)

Typology

David calls the Messiah Lord — divine authority embedded in lineage.

7. Warning Against the Scribes: Religion Without Integrity

“They devour widows’ houses…” (20:47)

Jesus exposes exploitation masked as piety.

St Augustine writes:

“Religious appearance cannot conceal injustice.”
(Sermons)

Typology

Widows symbolise vulnerable trust betrayed by false authority.

Judgment corresponds to misuse of influence.
