What to Expect at Mass

If you are new, visiting, or returning to Mass after some time away, it is natural to feel unsure about what will happen.

Please be reassured from the start:

You are welcome to come, sit quietly, and take part as you are able.
No one expects you to know what to do.

When You Arrive

People usually arrive a few minutes early, but it is fine to come in quietly at any point.

You may see people:

  • sitting in silence
  • praying
  • lighting a candle

You are free simply to take a seat and be still.

The Shape of the Mass

The Mass has a clear and steady structure:

  • readings from Scripture
  • prayers
  • the Eucharist

You do not need to follow every word or action.
Being present is already participation.

Sung Masses

In our parish, the Mass is normally sung, especially on Sundays and solemnities.

This means:

  • the priest sings many of the prayers
  • the congregation responds together
  • parts of the Mass are sung rather than spoken

Singing is part of the Church’s prayer and helps express worship together.

If you are unfamiliar with the responses, it is perfectly acceptable to:

  • listen quietly
  • join in when you feel comfortable

Incense

Incense is used at all Sunday Masses except the 6pm Sunday Mass.

Incense is a sign of:

  • prayer rising to God
  • reverence
  • the solemnity of worship

If incense is difficult for you, the Sunday 6pm Mass is celebrated without incense.

Weekday Masses

Weekday Masses are simpler and quieter.

At weekday Mass:

  • the Holy, Holy is sung
  • the Memorial Acclamation is sung
  • the Lamb of God is sung

Other parts of the Mass are usually spoken.

Standing, Sitting, and Kneeling

People may stand, sit, or kneel at different moments.

If you are unsure:

  • follow those around you, or
  • remain seated

No one will mind.

Holy Communion

If you are a Catholic who is prepared and in a state of grace, you are welcome to receive Holy Communion.

If you are not receiving Communion:

  • you may remain in your seat, or
  • come forward for a blessing putting you hand across to your opposite shoulder

No explanation is required.

Silence and Prayer

There are moments of silence during Mass.

These are intentional and part of prayer.
Silence is not awkward — it is worship.

If You Feel Uncertain

It is completely normal to feel unsure, especially at first.

The Mass is not a performance.
It is the Church at prayer.

You are not being watched or assessed.

A Final Word

You do not need to understand everything.
You do not need to do everything.

You are welcome simply to come.

Faith grows quietly through return and presence.
