A Guide for Catholic Parents and Godparents
Your child has now received the great gift of Baptism.
Through this sacrament, they have:
- been freed from original sin
- become a child of God
- become a member of the Church
- received the life of Christ within the soul
- been entrusted with the light of faith
Baptism is the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ.
The grace given on the day of Baptism is meant to grow gradually through prayer, worship, love, and faithful Christian living.
1. The Promises You Made
At the Baptism, parents and godparents promised to help the child grow in the Catholic faith.
This includes helping the child to know Christ through:
- prayer
- Sunday Mass
- the sacraments
- Christian example
- life within the Church
Children learn faith most deeply not only through words, but through the ordinary witness of family life.
2. Living Baptism Day by Day
Faith usually grows through small and faithful habits.
Simple things matter greatly:
✔ Teach your child simple prayers such as the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.
✔ Make the Sign of the Cross together each day.
✔ Keep Sunday Mass at the centre of family life.
✔ Use holy water at home and bless your child at bedtime.
✔ Speak naturally about God in daily life.
✔ Thank God together at meals, before journeys, and during difficult moments.
✔ Show forgiveness, patience, kindness, and love within the home.
✔ Bring your child regularly to church so they grow familiar with prayer and worship.
Children learn faith gradually by being present within the life of the Church.
3. Growing in Faith Together
Faith grows slowly and patiently over time.
As your child grows, help them gradually to:
- learn to pray
- listen to the Gospel
- know the saints
- understand the Mass
- prepare for Confession and Holy Communion
- love the Church and the sacraments
Reading Bible stories together, celebrating feast days, and speaking naturally about faith all help create a Christian home.
Our parish community wishes to continue walking with your family as your child grows in faith.
4. When Family Life Feels Difficult
Every family experiences busy periods, tiredness, distractions, and struggles in faith.
Do not become discouraged.
The Christian life is not about perfection, but about continually returning to Christ and beginning again.
Even small faithful steps matter:
- returning to Mass
- praying together again
- going to Confession
- asking questions
- seeking support from the parish community
God works patiently and quietly within families.
5. A Parent’s Prayer
Heavenly Father,
thank You for making my child Your own through Baptism.
Help me to keep the promises I have made today.
Teach me to guide my child with faith, patience, kindness, and love.
Help our home to grow closer to You through prayer, worship, and Christian life.
May my child always walk in the light of Christ and remain faithful to Him throughout life.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Final Reminder
Baptism is not the end of a journey, but the beginning.
The life of Christ has now been planted within your child.
Through prayer, love, Sunday Mass, and faithful Christian example, that life can continue to grow for many years to come.
The Church walks patiently with families as faith grows.
