Children’s Liturgy of the Word – 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A), 2nd August

Theme: Jesus Is the Bread of Life

Gospel: Matthew 14:13–21

Main Message:
Jesus cares for our bodies and our souls. He fed the hungry crowd with bread and now feeds us with Himself in the Holy Eucharist. Nothing is more important than being close to Jesus.

1. Welcome & Gathering

(Gather the children calmly.)

Leader:

Good morning everyone.

Today I want you to imagine something.

Imagine you have been outside all day.

You’ve been walking for hours.

You forgot your lunch.

Now it’s nearly evening.

Your tummy is rumbling.

You’re tired.

You’re thirsty.

How would you feel?

(Pause.)

That is exactly how the people in today’s Gospel felt.

Thousands of people had followed Jesus.

They had listened to Him all day.

Now everyone was hungry.

What do you think Jesus did?

Let’s find out.

Let us begin with the Sign of the Cross.

In the name of the Father…

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for loving us.

Thank You for caring about everything we need.

Help us to listen carefully today.

Help us to trust You.

Help us to love You more than anything else.

Amen.

2. Opening Conversation

Ask:

• What is your favourite food?

• What happens if you don’t eat all day?

• Can one meal last forever?

• What do our bodies need every day?

Allow answers.

Then say:

Our bodies need food every day.

But today Jesus teaches us that our souls need food too.

And only He can give it.

3. Gospel (Simplified)

Jesus had been teaching thousands of people.

The day was nearly over.

The disciples came to Him and said,

“The people are hungry.

Send them away to buy food.”

But Jesus answered,

“They need not go away.

You give them something to eat.”

The disciples looked around.

They only had five loaves of bread and two fish.

Jesus told them to bring the food to Him.

He looked up to Heaven.

He thanked His Father.

He blessed the bread.

He broke it.

He gave it to the disciples.

The disciples gave it to the people.

Everyone ate.

Everyone had enough.

There were even twelve baskets full of bread left over.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Children:

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

4. Reflection

The disciples saw a problem.

Jesus saw an opportunity.

The disciples counted the bread.

Jesus trusted His Father.

Sometimes we are like the disciples.

We say,

“I can’t.”

“I haven’t got enough.”

“I’m too small.”

“I’m frightened.”

But Jesus says,

“Bring it to Me.”

When we give Jesus what we have, He can do wonderful things.

Built-in Activity 1 – Count the Food

Ask:

How many loaves were there?

(Five.)

How many fish?

(Two.)

How many people?

(Thousands.)

Would you have thought that was enough?

(No.)

Explain:

Nothing is impossible for Jesus.

More Than Bread

Why did Jesus feed the crowd?

Because they were hungry.

But there was another reason.

Jesus wanted everyone to know who He really is.

Later He would say,

“I am the Bread of Life.”

Bread helps our bodies.

Jesus helps our souls.

Bread lasts one day.

Jesus gives eternal life.

Built-in Activity 2 – Hungry Hearts

Ask:

Can toys make us happy forever?

(No.)

Can chocolate make us happy forever?

(No.)

Can holidays last forever?

(No.)

Who is the only one who can truly fill our hearts?

(Jesus.)

Explain:

Good things are gifts from God.

But only God can satisfy our hearts forever.

Jesus Still Feeds Us

Every Sunday we come to Mass.

Do you know what Father does?

He takes the bread.

He blesses it.

He breaks it.

He gives it.

Those are exactly the same things Jesus did in today’s Gospel.

At Mass Jesus gives us an even greater miracle.

He gives us Himself in Holy Communion.

That is why the Mass is the most important thing we do all week.

Built-in Activity 3 – Which Is More Important?

Ask:

Which is more important?

A birthday cake…

or Holy Communion?

A football match…

or Sunday Mass?

A new toy…

or knowing Jesus?

Allow discussion.

Explain gently:

Many things are good.

But nothing is more important than Jesus.

Trusting Jesus

Imagine you were one of the disciples.

Jesus says,

“Feed everyone.”

Would you feel worried?

Probably!

Yet they trusted Him.

Sometimes we worry too.

School.

Friends.

Family.

Being ill.

Making mistakes.

Jesus says the same thing to us.

“Bring it to Me.”

He never stops caring for His children.

Built-in Activity 4 – My Worry

Ask:

If you could give one worry to Jesus today, what would it be?

Allow answers.

Then pray quietly:

“Jesus, I trust You.”

Living the Gospel This Week

This week I will:

• Thank God before every meal.

• Pray every day.

• Help someone who needs kindness.

• Come to Mass ready to meet Jesus.

• Thank Jesus after Holy Communion.

Quiet Prayer

Close your eyes.

Jesus,

Thank You for feeding the hungry crowd.

Thank You for loving me.

Help me to trust You.

Help me to remember that You are the Bread of Life.

Stay close to me every day.

Amen.

Children’s Intercessions

Leader:

Let us bring our prayers to our loving Father.

For the Church, that she may always help people come to know Jesus, the Bread of Life.

Lord, hear us.

For Pope Leo, Bishop Patrick, priests and deacons, that they may faithfully lead God’s people to Christ.

Lord, hear us.

For children preparing for or who have recently received Holy Communion, that they may always love Jesus in the Eucharist.

Lord, hear us.

For people who are hungry, lonely, sick or worried, that God will comfort them and provide for their needs.

Lord, hear us.

For our families, that our homes may be filled with prayer, kindness and love.

Lord, hear us.

For those who have died, that they may share forever in the heavenly banquet.

Lord, hear us.

(Optional Hail Mary.)

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for feeding the hungry crowd.

Thank You for feeding our souls.

Help us to trust You.

Help us always to come to Mass with joy.

Help us one day to share in the great feast of Heaven.

Amen.

Sending Back

Today we learned that Jesus always knows what we need.

He fed the hungry crowd with bread.

Today He feeds us with His love and with the Holy Eucharist.

As you return to church, watch carefully.

You’ll see Father take the bread, bless it, break it and give it—just as Jesus did in today’s Gospel.

Additional Optional Activities

1. Five Loaves and Two Fish

Place five paper loaves and two paper fish on the floor.

Ask:

“Would this be enough to feed everyone here?”

Explain that Jesus can do what seems impossible.

Ask:

“Would this help if you were hungry?”

Then ask:

Jesus, especially in Holy Communion.

Call out different things.

If they think it feeds the body, they put their hands on their tummy.

If they think it feeds the soul, they put their hands on their heart.

Bread.

Prayer.

Holy Communion.

Cake.

The Bible.

Chocolate.

Jesus.

4. Which Lasts Longer?

Help at home.

Be kind to someone who is lonely.
