The Rosary is one of the most loved and enduring devotions of the Catholic Church. Through it, Christians contemplate the mysteries of Christ in union with Our Lady.
The Rosary is both simple and profound. It can be prayed by children, by the elderly, by beginners in prayer, and by those advanced in the spiritual life.
The Purpose of the Rosary
The Rosary is not merely the repetition of prayers.
Its purpose is to lead the soul into meditation upon the mysteries of salvation:
- the Incarnation
- the public ministry of Christ
- the Passion
- the Resurrection
- the glory of heaven
Our Lady leads us always towards her Son.
Pray Slowly and Attentively
The Rosary should not be rushed.
Pray calmly and reverently.
Even if distractions come, continue peacefully.
A Daily Habit
Many Catholics find great spiritual stability through praying at least part of the Rosary each day.
A single decade prayed faithfully is better than grand intentions that quickly disappear.
The Rosary fits naturally:
- in the morning
- during travel
- with family prayer
- before Mass
- during times of suffering or anxiety
Family Prayer
The Rosary has long been a prayer of the Christian home.
Even short family Rosaries can help establish peace, reverence, and shared faith.
Children learn prayer deeply when they hear it prayed consistently.
Persevere Through Distraction
Distractions are common.
Do not become discouraged.
The value of the Rosary lies not in perfect concentration, but in faithful prayer offered with love and perseverance.
A School of Christian Life
The Rosary gradually forms the soul through repeated contemplation of Christ.
It teaches:
- patience
- humility
- trust
- perseverance
- love of the Gospel
It remains one of the Church’s simplest and most fruitful devotions.
How to Pray the Rosary
The Rosary is a meditation on the life of Christ prayed with Our Lady through repeated and peaceful prayer, using a set of beads to help keep place and maintain recollection.
The Rosary begins with the crucifix:
1. Make the Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2. Pray the Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.
On the first large bead:
3. Pray the Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
On the next three small beads:
4. Pray three Hail Marys
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
After the three Hail Marys:
5. Pray the Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
The Five Decades
Each section of the Rosary is called a decade.
For each decade:
6. Announce the Mystery
Reflect quietly upon the mystery from the life of Christ and Our Lady.
7. On the large bead, pray the Our Father
8. On each of the ten small beads, pray a Hail Mary
9. At the end of the decade, pray the Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer
Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Fatima Prayer
O my Jesus,
forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of hell,
lead all souls to heaven,
especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
Repeat this pattern for all five decades.
Concluding Prayers
Hail Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy towards us;
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Final Prayer
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
O God, whose only-begotten Son,
by His life, death, and resurrection,
has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life;
grant, we beseech Thee,
that while meditating upon these mysteries
of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
we may imitate what they contain
and obtain what they promise,
through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
