Homilies

The Word of God in the Life of the Church

At every Holy Mass, the Church listens to the Word of God.

The readings from Sacred Scripture are not simply texts from the past. Through them, God continues to speak to His people, calling us to faith, conversion, hope and a deeper friendship with Jesus Christ.

The homily belongs within that celebration of the Mass. It helps us listen more carefully to the Scriptures, understand them within the faith of the Church, and recognise what the Lord is asking of us in our lives today.

The homilies published here are offered so that you can return to the Word of God after Mass, reflect upon it more deeply, and carry it into the week ahead.

They may also be helpful to those who were unable to be present, those returning to the practice of the faith, or anyone wishing to grow in their understanding of Catholic teaching.

They are, however, not a substitute for coming to Holy Mass. The Christian life is centred upon worship, prayer, the sacraments and belonging to the life of the Church.

Returning to a Homily

A homily does not need to be read only once.

Sometimes a particular Scripture passage or teaching speaks to something happening in our lives. Returning to it quietly can help us notice something we missed the first time.

You might simply:

  • read the Gospel or Scripture passage again;
  • read the homily slowly;
  • notice one sentence or idea that particularly strikes you;
  • speak to the Lord about it in prayer;
  • ask what concrete response He may be asking of you.

The purpose is not simply to acquire more information.

The Word of God is meant to lead us towards Christ, conversion and holiness.
